Explanation of the Book of Prayer-15

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : We will take a new lesson.
"And from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
Spitting in the mosque is a sin and it is expiated by burying the spittle. البزاقُ في المسجد خطيئةٌ، وكفارتها دفنُها
Sunan Abi Dawud 475Sahih (Al-Albani)
"

Spittle is thick saliva, whether it is phlegm or not. As for thin saliva that does not affect the ground, it has no effect and is not called spittle; it is the thick kind, whether it is phlegm or not. His saying "in the mosque" uses the article for mental reference or for comprehensiveness.
The student: The second.

The Shaykh : Yes, the second one, meaning in every mosque.
And his saying
A sin خطيئة
means a bad deed, because it is from the verb "to err" (khata'a), so he is one who errs, unlike "to make a mistake" (akhta'a), where he is one who made a mistake. This is what is excused as a sin, meaning a bad deed. And its expiation is covering it and overlooking it. "Burying it" means that you bury this phlegm. This is apparent if the mosque is paved with gravel, sand, or something similar. As for what is covered with cotton or wool carpets, or something similar, as in our time now, its expiation is to leave it until it disappears.
