Giving zakat al-fitr from dry food by measure is more cautious than by weight
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: From 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Baz to the honorable brother / R. M. G. May Allah guide him to all good, amen. Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings. As for what follows:
Your noble letter dated 5/6/1398 AH has reached me, may Allah guide you to His path, and what it contained regarding the question about the amount of zakat al-fitr from 'Abi' dates and similar items weighed in French riyals and kilograms was known.
A: The obligatory amount in zakat al-fitr is a sa' of the staple food of the land, by the sa' of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), from every Muslim, whether young or old, male or female. Its amount is four handfuls with full, moderate hands of dry food, such as dates, wheat, and the like. As for the weight, its amount is four hundred and eighty mithqals, and in French riyals, eighty French riyals; because the weight of one riyal is six mithqals. And its amount in the Saudi Arabian riyal is one hundred and ninety-two riyals. As for the kilogram, it is approximately three kilograms. If the Muslim gives from dry food, such as dry dates, good wheat, rice, dry raisins, or 'aqt, by measure, it is more cautious than by weight. And if the staple food of the land is corn, millet, or other staple grains, a sa' of that is sufficient. And Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) knows best.
And peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
