Explanation of the Book of Tawhid-49

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh :"And Muslim narrated from Abu al-Hayyaj (may Allah be pleased with him), and Abu al-Hayyaj is from the Tabi'un (the generation after the Companions), he said" Ali ibn Abi Talib said to me
Should I not send you on the same mission as Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) sent me? ألا أبعثك على ما بعثني عليه رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم
Sahih Muslim 969a, 969b
Sending is dispatching for an important matter, such as calling to Allah and the like. This is what sending means. Allah the Exalted said:
And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger ولقد بعثنا في كل أمة رسولا
[An-Nahl 16:36]
So sending means dispatching for an important matter. And his saying: "with the same mission with which" it is possible that the meaning is "with what sent me," in which case "with" means "with" (the preposition ba), i.e., with what sent me. And it is possible that "with" is in its apparent sense, meaning "upon" (the preposition 'ala) for elevation, because the one sent walks upon what he was sent for, as if it is a path for him, so he walked upon the path, i.e., upon it. And this is the more correct, because the rule with us is that whatever meaning agrees with the apparent wording of the text, what is it? It is the most fitting for the wording. So if the wording is ambiguous between two meanings, and it is more apparent in one of them, it is obligatory to attribute it to that apparent meaning.
He said:
on the same mission as Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) sent me على ما بعثني عليه رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم
Sahih Muslim 969a, 969b
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Ali ibn Abi Talib to Yemen, as is well known. And he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was in Mecca during the Farewell Pilgrimage. He said:
That you do not leave. أن لا تدَع
Do not leave: This "an" is the accusative particle, and after it is "la" the negation, and
invoke تدع
is connected to the accusative "an," and it is a substitute for his saying: "with the same mission with which," meaning a substitute for
notما
it is a substitute for
notما
and it is a partial substitute for the whole, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Ali ibn Abi Talib with more than that, but this is part of what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him for.
Spare no portrait unwiped out أن لا تدع صورة إلا طمستها
Riyad as-Salihin 1687
Image is general because it is an indefinite noun in the context of what? In the context of negation. "And every indefinite noun in the context of negation implies generality" Yes.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes.
The student: And the prohibition

The Shaykh : Generally, what we have now is negation
that you should not leave أن لا تدع
And that is why "tad'a" (leave) was in the accusative case and not the jussive case. Good. And his saying:
imageصورة
includes. We said it is general, so it includes every image, but what is intended by that is the image of an animal according to the majority of scholars, and no one differed on this except Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him), who said: The fruit-bearing tree is forbidden to be depicted.
And his saying:
except that you obliterate it إلا طمستها
How is the erasing done? Erasing, if it is colored, is by placing another color on it that removes the features of this image. And if it is carved, it means to dig ... on its face until its features are not clear. And if it is three-dimensional, the body is removed from it until its features disappear. And if it is in the form of a statue, meaning an independent body, it is removed, as in the authentic hadith in the hadith of Jibril, where the Messenger (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) said
if he passes by the head of a statue, let it be cut off until it is in the form of a tree مر برأس التمثال فليُقطع حتى يكون كهيئة الشجرة
So the important thing is that erasing is multiple: now colored, carved, protruding, and statue, and each one has its specific erasing. And the apparent meaning of the hadith is that whether this image is worshipped besides Allah or not, even those that are not worshipped besides Allah, the Messenger (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) sent Ali ibn Abi Talib to erase them.

The questioner : Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Yes

The questioner : How...

The Shaykh : Yes, because

The questioner : Now he is prohibiting him from ...

The Shaykh : No, no, he is not prohibiting him; he is commanding him not to leave. He is commanding him not to leave any image without erasing it. I command you not to ... so-so, so "la" here is a negation, because the custom of the prohibitive particle is the jussive case, and here it is in the accusative case due to "an."

The questioner : ... is in the accusative case due to "an" that he not leave.

The Shaykh : Yes

The questioner : The negation is in the accusative case due to "an" that he not leave?

The Shaykh : The negation is on "id'a" (leave), on the word "id'a," and it is an explanation of his saying:
I did not send me ما بعثني
meaning I am sending you for this, for the negation of your leaving
any image without defacing itصورة إلا طمستها

And his saying:
or a high grave without levelling It ولا قبرا مشرفا إلا سويته
Sahih Muslim 969a, 969b
nor any raised graveولا قبراً مشرفاً
raised, meaning elevated.
without leveling itإلا سويته
meaning I leveled it with the graves around it. And it is possible that the intended meaning of leveling here is repair, as in His saying, the Exalted:
Who created and proportioned الذي خلق فسوى
[Al-A'la 87:2]
meaning He perfected His creation in the best way. The two meanings are close or concomitant, but the latter meaning is better, because on the assumption that all graves are raised, we return them all to what? To leveling, meaning to be improved as required by the Shari'ah. As for the first, if some graves are raised above others, they are leveled with the others. Being raised has several aspects:
First: That it is raised by the large stones placed as a marker on it, which people call these
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Let's see now, say ... al-Qasim, no, are they grave markers? Markers
The student: Nasa'il

The Shaykh : Nasa'il with the lam, good, these
The student: Nasa'il with the ba

The Shaykh : Yes, and the language of Hail is Nasayib, and I think it is also Nasayib in Riyadh, yes, and the ...
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Witness, witness?
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes, from witnessing, yes. So what do we say about them? We need to gather the witnesses?
The student: Shawahid

The Shaykh : Or al-Shawahid
The student: Shawahid

The Shaykh : Yes, al-Shawahid. Good, the closest thing, the closest thing, is that they are Nasayib with the ba, because they are erected, or al-'Alamat (markers), because they are a marker for the grave. In any case, one aspect of being raised is that the Nasayib of the grave or its markers are large such that it is prominent among the graves, in which case it must be leveled with the graves so that it does not stand out by anything. And among the aspects of being raised is that a building is constructed on it, and this is one of the major sins, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed those who build mosques and lamps on them. And is it among the aspects of being raised that a lamp is placed on it?
The student: No.

The Shaykh : Yes
The student: ... other

The Shaykh : Yes, this is other? Good. One aspect of its being raised is that it is raised by coloring, by coloring with the nun, by placing decorated colors on its Nasayib and the like. So anything that is raised, meaning apparent above others, elevated above others, distinguished from others, must be leveled with the others. And that is because if we open the door to raising graves, it leads to consequences that are not to be praised, such as shirk (associating partners with Allah) and exaggeration in them. And this is what the Lawgiver blocks; every path that leads to shirk, the Lawgiver blocks it to the utmost.
The reason for mentioning the raised grave with the image is that each of them may be taken as a means to shirk. For we know that the origin of shirk among the people of Noah was that they depicted images of righteous men, and when time passed, they worshipped them. Similarly, these raised graves may have exaggeration in them increased until they are made idols worshipped besides Allah. And the commentator (may Allah have mercy on him) lengthened in this chapter; he lengthened the speech on building on graves, and that is because its trial in Islamic lands is ancient and widespread, except for our land, praise be to Allah, for it is safe from that. We ask Allah to make it continue and to protect the lands of the Muslims from its evil.
Good, so the summary of this chapter: First, what is the relevance of mentioning it in the Book of Tawhid? And does it have a connection to the divisions of tawhid or to some of them? Yes.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes
Radio voice: ... In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and blessings and peace upon the Seal of the Prophets and Messengers, our master and the best of all mankind, Muhammad, and upon his family and his companions ... Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. We welcome you all and present to you this episode of al-Fitrah al-Hanifiyyah. Deceit, betrayal, and deception are among the causes of shaking mutual trust in family dealings and in every dealing between people. True trust is strengthened by fulfilling trust and honor in ethical dealing.

The Shaykh : Tawhid al-rububiyyah (oneness of lordship). Good, his saying, yes, the second research in this chapter: That we say image-making is divided into several sections, or not? Yes, image-making is divided into several sections, yes.
The student: ... rububiyyah ...

The Shaykh : And it has a soul, it is not from the creation of Allah, and it is growing, it has no soul, it is not from the creation of Allah, and it is not growing, it is not from the action of the created beings, so? Four.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Let's leave this for later.
The student: Three-dimensional and it has a soul

The Shaykh : Three-dimensional and it has a soul, yes. Good, the first one, if he depicts what is from the creation of Allah and has a soul, what do you say about its ruling?
The student: It is not permissible

The Shaykh : Yes, it is not permissible, but is it from the minor sins or from the major sins?
The student: From the major sins

The Shaykh : Yes, we say this is haram (forbidden) and from the major sins. What do you know of the punishment of this image-maker?
The student: The most severely punished of people

The Shaykh : The most severely punished of people, this is one, but here
The student: ...

The Shaykh : No, no, this is not a punishment, yes ...
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Good, this is two, yes.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Good, three.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes, but is this a punishment or a description of his state and his description?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes.
The student: ...

The Shaykh :
Oppression shall be darkness on the Day of Judgment. الظلم ظلمات يوم القيامة
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2030Sahih (Darussalam)
Good.
The student: That he is the most severely punished of people on the Day of Resurrection

The Shaykh : Did we not mention them?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Where is it? That he is in the Fire, every image-maker is in the Fire. Good, after the sixth, but the author did not mention it, which is the curse, the curse, as in the hadith of Abu Juhayfa, he said
the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the image-makersالرسول عليه الصلاة والسلام لعن المصورين
These punishments, and may Allah protect us, are six, and one of them is sufficient to be cautious of and to stay away from. Good.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : Image-making, here.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : And by Allah, I do not know anything good about this if one draws a picture of it.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : It has no life. If one draws something of Allah’s creation that grows, it has no life in it.
The student: ... Mujahid said that it falls under this prohibition, and the majority said that it does not fall under it.

The Shaykh : Good, well done. Yes, what is Mujahid’s evidence, O Abd al-Rahman?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : But there is nothing in it that is... close to the text.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : No, yes.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : The last one.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes, this one. It is clear that it has no life
a grain of wheat or that of barley فليخلقوا حبة أو ليخلقوا شعيرة
Sahih Muslim 2111a, b
Yes, what is the evidence of the majority, O Dawud?
The student: The evidence of the majority.

The Shaykh : Yes
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Every painter is in the Fire. This may apply to them, but not to us.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : ... Mujahid.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : And the evidence of the majority.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : And He
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Do not say trees and the like. Do not say trees and the like and others.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : And other
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Trees have no life. Trees have no life.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Do they have life or not?
The student: They have no life.

The Shaykh : Yes, they have no life. Correct, yes.
The student: Also, the second hadith:
He who painted pictures in the world would be compelled to breathe soul in them on the Day of Resurrection, but he would not be able to breathe soul (in them). من صور صورة في الدنيا كُلف أن ينفخ فيها الروح وليس بنافخ
Sahih Muslim 2110b

The Shaykh : Yes, and this has no life. Good.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes, until it is in the form of a tree. Yes, good. We mentioned that the completion of the argument is for a person to mention his evidence and refute his opponent’s evidence. So how do we refute Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him)? Isa.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : It has life, and the door of challenge is different from the door of warning. Good, and... the hadith is also in this chapter regarding the obligation to deface images. The obligation to deface images in general. Abdullah.
The student: The hadith of Abu al-Hayyaj:
Spare no portrait unwiped out لا تدع صورة إلا طمستها
Riyad as-Salihin 1687
...

The Shaykh : ... Good, do we exclude anything from that? We did not mention what is excluded, but based on the disagreement on that, and I think we mentioned it...
If a person draws something of Allah’s creation but it does not grow, what is the ruling? ... The one next to you, O Abdullah, drew something of Allah’s creation but it does not grow.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes
The student: ...

The Shaykh : I mean, is it permissible or not? Permissible, permissible. Drawing a picture of the moon on a blackboard, drawing a picture of the moon and adding lines as if they are its rays, and... is it permissible or not?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Answer, and then give the reason. Is it permissible or not? Permissible, and what do you say?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : And what do you say, O...? There is disagreement even about what does not grow? We agree on this answer, correct? This is permissible, it is agreed upon. Good, if a person draws what humans make, one person draws a car...
The student: Permissible.

The Shaykh : How is it permissible?
The student: He drew a car.

The Shaykh : Yes
The student: Permissible.

The Shaykh : But from the model of seventy-eight, is it permissible? ... The last manufacture.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : And what do you say, correct?
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : Because if it is permissible to create, to make the original... it is even more permissible, yes, yes.

The questioner : ... the car.

The Shaykh : And it has, meaning, a neck, ears, and the like.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : And what do you say about this?
The student: This is not permissible. This is a picture of a camel, and he inserted the image.

The Shaykh : The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) objected to... the blanket. A woman had a blanket with horses on it that had wings, and she said that these are from the horses of Solomon. So is it permissible, for example, for us to make, for example, a picture of a camel with four wheels? Is it permissible, O Abdullah?
The student: No, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Yes.
The student: ... the belly is shaped like a car.

The Shaykh : But only the belly. It is possible to place its belly. Actually, I think this falls under the prohibition, or not?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : No, it is... even the square belly, which is in the car, may be loaded with cargo, yes, and it resembles the car. So as long as the camel’s belly is present, it is not permissible.

The questioner : ... the head, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : Is... the head.

The Shaykh : In the hadith, the head means that if it is removed, the image is removed with it. Yes...
A book called Wonders of Creatures, they are drawn, and I seek refuge in Allah, even the angels are drawn, Jibril and Israfil and the like. All of this is forbidden and not permissible. Good.

The questioner : If the head is cut off, is the meaning that it is cut from the neck, meaning is that sufficient?

The Shaykh : Yes, it is sufficient. If you cut the neck, it is enough. The prohibition is removed.

The questioner : Just the face.

The Shaykh : Yes, the head, the head and the face, that which represents the image completely.

The questioner : Shaykh, if we cut it from a statue.

The Shaykh : If we cut it from a statue and the neck remains, there is no obstacle. Yes.

The questioner : And the head...

The Shaykh : The head falls off on its own, yes. But is it obligatory to destroy the head here? Or if a head remains without a body, does it become permissible?
The student: Meaning, a head without a body is permissible?

The Shaykh : This is the apparent... meaning... so let it be cut, and he did not say the head should be destroyed. So the apparent meaning of the hadith is that if this is separated from that, there is no harm, because this is not called a human being, nor is that one, meaning this is not called an image, nor is that one an image.
The student: Meaning, on this basis, it is permissible to draw...

The Shaykh : Yes, yes, based on this. And I have hesitation in this issue regarding the head. As for the body, if... without a head, it is like a tree. Yes.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : We have left for us in this issue, meaning, a practical matter that we must investigate now... just as the brother said, pictures are found in tissue boxes, and they are also found in magazines and in newspapers, but they do not care about these pictures, nor... for the pictures, and they are not important to them. So my opinion on them is that scrupulousness, especially in what can be dispensed with, is to leave it, even in what is disdained like boxes and the like. Scrupulousness is to leave it without a doubt, and because there is plenty in what has no doubt, and as long as Allah is making us independent of this matter, let us leave it. As for the thing that cannot be dispensed with, and the pictures in it are not intended, and guarding against it involves hardship, the apparent ruling is that the prohibition is lifted in it, based on the general legal principle
and has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty وما جعل عليكم في الدين من حرج
[Al-Hajj 22:78]
and hardship brings ease, as the scholars said. And distancing oneself from it is better. Distancing oneself from it is better. The further a person is from these matters, the better. But this is a hardship for people. I mean, if we oblige people with this thing and say this is forbidden and the angels do not enter your homes, yes, and they did not intend the pictures, nor did they acquire these pictures, nor are they of any importance to them at all, and guarding against them is a great hardship. This is excused to remove the difficulty from this Ummah. And likewise, what is found in the currency. The currency has pictures, and what is also found in diapers, diapers for people and... cars, and I think in certificates, except I think university ones do not put pictures in them, right?
The student: No, no, they do not put them in.

The Shaykh : University ones, I think they do not put a picture in them. But the other certificates, look, primary school and the like, they put pictures in them. So these issues, guarding against them is difficult, and declaring people sinful for having them in their homes is also difficult, because a person feels that he is disobeying Allah in this case, disobeying Allah... he inflicts on himself anxiety and disturbance. A person may fear for himself if we include it in the prohibition. It is said that the thing that can be dispensed with, the better is to dispense with it. And as for the thing that cannot be dispensed with and involves hardship, Allah the Exalted did not place any difficulty on us in our religion, especially since it is not intended for us and we do not care about it at all.

The questioner : The hadith of Abu al-Hayyaj, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Yes

The questioner : ... the hardship...

The Shaykh : ... with the hardship, that if a person wanted to track down things, he would be exhausted. For example, if a magazine came to him with, for example, five or six pictures, it would come daily, he would be exhausted in defacing them or tearing them, for example. This is a type of hardship.
