Continuation of the explanation of the author's statement and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): "… I seek refuge in You from the evil of my self…"

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : A good, pure self that commands good, and an evil self that incites to evil.
The student: To evil.

The Shaykh : To evil, and a self that rebukes; a rebuking self.
The student: They became three.

The Shaykh : Look, is this a third one, or is this a description of the two previous ones?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : There is a difference of opinion on this. Some say it is a third self, and some say no, it is a description of the two previous ones. So the tranquil self rebukes you, and the self that incites to evil rebukes you. Thus, the saying of Allah the Exalted:
(1) I swear by the Day of Resurrection (2) And I swear by the reproaching soul [to the certainty of resurrection]. لا أقسم بيوم القيامة ولا أقسم بالنفس اللوامة
[Al-Qiyamah 75:1-2]
includes both selves, the rebuking one. And what does it rebuke you for? What does the tranquil self rebuke you for?
The student: For negligence.

The Shaykh : For negligence in an obligatory duty. If you neglected an obligatory duty, it rebukes you. If you did something forbidden, it rebukes you. And the self that incites to evil is the opposite, the opposite. If you did good, it rebukes you. What comes out? To pray the Fajr prayer in this cold, yes, and to perform wudu with this cold water, to sleep in your warm, soft bed. And when the sun rises and gets high and it becomes warm, then pray. And perhaps we will allow you later, yes. This is a rebuking self, what is it?
The student: evil.

The Shaykh : The one that commands evil, the one that commands evil. Okay, it rebukes him if he left a prohibited thing. If he left the prohibited thing, why don't you go with so-and-so to such-and-such a city? Do what you want, no one will blame you, nothing. Yes, do what you want. There are intoxicants, there is zina, there is sodomy, there are all the desires. Don't let this spring break pass, yes, don't let this pass. It rebukes you, or not? It rebukes you. So, the rebuking self, according to the stronger position, is a description of both selves, the tranquil self and the self that incites to evil. Yes. Okay, here we say:
I seek refuge in You from the evil of my soul أعوذ بك من شر نفسي
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3529Hasan (Darussalam)
Which of the two selves?
The student: The one that incites to evil.

The Shaykh : Yes, the one that incites to evil. Yes.
from the evil of every creature You seize by the forelock ومن شر كل دابة أنت آخذ بناصيتها
Sunan Ibn Majah 3873Sahih (Darussalam)
From the evil من شر
Also. Okay, it appears that we should suffice for now. Glory be to You, O Allah, and praise be to You. I bear witness that there is no god but You.
The Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. And may prayers and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. Hadith:
When a person stands for prayer, he should not spit in front of his face إذا قام احدم إلى الصلاة فلا يبصقن قبل وجهه

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained that by the fact that Allah accepted his face.
And what is its solution, O 'Adil?
On his left is an angel
When the two receivers receive, seated on the right and on the left. إذ يتلقى المتلقيان عن اليمن وعن الشمال قعيد
[Qaf 50:17]
So they answered that this is perhaps a specific angel in the state of prayer, and not the two angels who are always accompanying the person. Yes. And this is based on verifying the authenticity of this addition. If there is an angel on his right, and if this is authentic, then this answer is fine.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes
The student: We will leave it as a research topic.

The Shaykh : Yes, we will leave it as a research topic for you.
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : You are the one who suggested it, so let it be suggested. Yes, okay.
And the greatest of all is greater than the mercy of parents, and greater than the mercy of the self for the self. Okay, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, and we addressed the word
The evil of my self شر نفسي
and we explained that the selves
The student : Three

The Shaykh : Three
The student: Two selves.

The Shaykh : Or two selves? That the selves are two, and the third is a description of each of them, which is the rebuking one. Okay, and we explained, no, we didn't reach that.
