Seven from a cow or a camel is sufficient for a man and his household

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: Your presence, the honorable Shaykh Abdul Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz (may Allah preserve him).
Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings, and after that:
We kindly request your ruling: Is seven from a cow or a camel sufficient for a man and his household? We hope you will graciously provide an answer, as we are grateful; because some people among us do not consider this sufficient, and the festival is approaching, and we wish to be clear about this matter. Peace be upon you.

Answer: The authentic Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) indicates that one head from camels, cows, or sheep is sufficient for a man and his household, even if they are numerous. As for seven from a camel or a cow, there is hesitation and disagreement among the scholars regarding its sufficiency for a man and his household. The stronger view is that it is sufficient for a man and his household, because a man and his household are like one person. However, one head from sheep is better. And Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) knows best, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon His servant and messenger Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
