Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Regarding lost sheep after the time has passed and they have been described: Is it better to give them in charity, or to take them and eat them?

Answer:
No, it is his property. It is his ownership
It is for you, for your brother, or for the wolf.لك أو لأخيك أو للذئب
Sahih al-Bukhari 2438
but after he has described them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who found a stray article is himself led astray if he does not advertise it.من آوى ضالّةً فهو ضال ما لم يعرفها
Sahih Muslim 1725
narrated by Muslim. He should describe them for a year. If keeping them is difficult for him, he should sell them and keep their price and their description. If it is easy for them to graze with his sheep, he should let them graze.
Q: But is it said: he gives them in charity, or he takes ownership of them?
The Shaykh: No, it is his ownership. If the year is completed, it is his ownership, so that if their owner comes one day, he pays it to him if he has described them.
