Is it necessary that the understanding of the Qur'an and the Sunnah be practiced by the Companions and the Successors?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The student : So, my Shaykh, do you want me to conclude that the understanding of the Qur'an and the Sunnah must have been practiced by the Companions and the Successors?

The Shaykh : Of course. And what is the meaning of His saying:
and follows other than the way of the believers
[An-Nisa 4:115]
.
The student :
We will give him what he has taken
[An-Nisa 4:115]
.

The Shaykh :
and my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided Caliphs
,
What I am upon and my Companions.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2641Da'if (Darussalam)
This understanding that Ibn Hazm and other scholars understood is either a correct understanding or it is not correct. If it is correct in reality, then the Salaf either understood it or they did not know it. No one dares to say, with even a particle of intellect, that they did not know it. So they must have known it and recognized it. Do we act upon it? It is one of two things: they acted upon it or they did not act upon it. No one says, "They knew a knowledge but did not act upon it." So if we see that this claim, which is said to be knowledge, was not acted upon, we know that it is not knowledge. And by this logical sequence, we refute the word that was said just now about the later scholars, that the later generation is more knowledgeable and more wise. Allah is the Greatest.
The student : So, my Shaykh, all the verses now are interpreted as those that were revealed regarding the prohibition of taqlid (following a scholar without knowing his evidence), or the meaning of the prohibition of taqlid, or the prohibition of taqlid was derived from them, such as
And when it is said to them, "Follow what Allah has revealed," they say, "Rather, we will follow that which we found our fathers doing."
[Al-Baqarah 2:170]
. All these verses, my Shaykh, and those whose meaning refers back to what the Salaf were upon in understanding and practice.

The Shaykh: Yes.
