Do the scholars of the Shi'ah and their elite disbelieve? And is it said that they all disbelieve? Or is it obligatory to distinguish in that?

The questioner: In the fatwa of Shaykh Sayyid Tantawi.

The Shaykh: The origin of this is that the lineage is treacherous, because it is more likely that he is not a writer, because some words slip out of him that indicate his madhhab, but he is constantly fighting the Shi'ah in many of their beliefs. Therefore, from those Shi'ah whom we know in detail as I mentioned earlier, what matters to us is that among the elite and the common people, we have found from them a belief that constitutes disbelief, so we declare him a disbeliever, otherwise we do not. This is due to what you know of the danger of rushing to declare a Muslim who testifies that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah a disbeliever. Added to what I mentioned is that the situation now is completely different in Sunni communities, where an Islamic awakening has appeared among the people of the Sunnah and the community that did not exist less than half a century ago. People used to be followers of scholars without knowledge, and they were Sufis, and they were superstitious. This awakening, which we call the Salafi call, now, and praise be to Allah, Allah has blessed it. I also believe that this Salafi awakening has invaded, so to speak, Shi'ah and Ibadi regions, and many have responded to it. And now we hear that many of the Shi'ah in Iraq have become Sunni, and perhaps you have heard something of this?! And I believe that this awakening, when we mention it, we assume it does not extend beyond the known Muslim group called the people of the Sunnah. No, I believe it has extended even to the other groups. Therefore, I do not imagine that all the scholars of the Shi'ah in this era believe in all the falsehoods recorded in the books of their imams, as they claim! Among them is the lie I mentioned earlier from Khomeini. They have, so to speak, very terrible falsehoods, including their belief that this mushaf in our hands is incomplete, and that it equals a quarter of the mushaf of Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). We have seen this mushaf that they claim is the mushaf of Fatimah. This is clear disbelief in His saying - the Exalted - :
Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian. إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ
[Al-Hijr 15:9]
, apart from their other various falsehoods. So I do not believe that all the scholars of the Shi'ah in this era believe in all the misguidance they have inherited from the books of their earlier imams: like this al-Kulayni, the author of the book al-Kafi. This is considered by them in the position of "Sahih al-Bukhari" with the people of the Sunnah. It contains many, many such falsehoods, and from it Khomeini derived the aforementioned falsehood. And I think with this the answer has become clear, if Allah wills?

The questioner: Yes.
