Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) stated, in what he quoted from Usamah ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
A man will be brought on the Day of Resurrection and thrown into the Fire until the girths of his belly burst out, and he will turn around with them as a donkey turns around on its millstone. The people of the Fire will gather around him and say: What is the matter with you? Did you not used to enjoin good and forbid evil? He will say: I used to enjoin good but I did not do it, and I used to forbid evil but I did it.
This hadith contains a severe warning against the man who enjoins good but does not do it, and forbids evil but does it, refuge with Allah. He says:
A man will be brought on the Day of Resurrection
Sahih Muslim 2989a
meaning that the angels will bring him and he will be thrown into the Fire, not entering it gently, but he will be thrown into it as a stone is thrown into the sea.
and the girths of his belly will burst out
Meaning his intestines; al-aqtab is the plural of qutb, which is the intestine. Meaning that they burst out: they come out of his belly due to the severity of the throwing, refuge with Allah.
and he will turn around with them as a donkey turns around on its millstone
This simile is for condemnation; he compared him to a donkey that turns around on a millstone. The description of that is that in large mills, before these iron machines were found, two large stones are placed and ground between each other, and an opening is made in the upper one through which the grains enter, and a wooden pole is tied to the back of the donkey, and then it turns around on the millstone, and in its turning, the millstone grinds. So this man who is thrown into the Fire turns around on his intestines, refuge with Allah, as the donkey turns around on its millstone. The people of the Fire will gather around him and say to him: What is the matter with you? What brought you here, while you used to enjoin good and forbid evil? He will say, refuge with Allah, admitting it upon himself:
He enjoins good but does not do it
He says to the people: Pray, but he does not pray. He says: Give zakah, but he does not give zakah. And he says: Be dutiful to your parents, be dutiful to your parents, but he is not dutiful to his parents. And so on, he enjoins good but does not do it. He forbids evil, saying to the people: Do not backbite people, do not consume riba, do not cheat in sales, do not be bad in companionship, do not be bad neighbors, and the like of those forbidden things that he forbids. But he does them, refuge with Allah. He sells with riba, cheats, is bad in companionship, is bad to neighbors, and other than that. So he—may Allah grant us safety—enjoins good but does not do it, and forbids evil but does it. May Allah grant us safety. He will be punished with this punishment and this disgrace.
I used to enjoin (upon people) to do what was reputable but did not practise that myself. I had been forbidding people to do what was disreputable, but practised it myself.
Sahih Muslim 2989a
So it is obligatory for a person to start with himself and forbid him from evil, to start with himself and command him to good, because the greatest right you have over anyone after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is your own self.
"Start with yourself and forbid it from its evil *** And if it stops from it, then you are forbearing"
Start with it, then try to advise your brothers and command them to good and forbid them from evil, so that you may be a righteous person who reforms others. May Allah make me and you among the righteous reformers, for He is Generous and Bountiful.
The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
