Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “And do not throw your own hands into destruction”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is the interpretation of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]وَلاَ تُلْقُواْ بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ
[Al-Baqarah 2:195]
?

Answer:
This noble verse, the scholars of exegesis mentioned that it was revealed regarding the Ansar in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah, when they intended to abandon jihad and devote themselves to their farms. Allah revealed regarding that His saying:
And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destructionوَأَنفِقُواْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ وَلاَ تُلْقُواْ بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ
[al-Baqarah: 195]. Thus, He the Exalted clarified that what is intended by that is: delaying in jihad in the path of Allah while having the ability.
And the verse is general, as in the legal maxim: that the consideration in texts is by the generality of the wording, not by the specificity of the causes. Therefore, it is not permissible for a person to throw his hand into destruction, such as throwing himself from a high place and saying: “I am relying on Allah,” or taking poison and saying: “I am relying on Allah,” or stabbing himself with a knife or the like and saying: “I am relying on Allah, I am submitting.” All of this is not permissible.
So it is obligatory for the Muslim to distance himself from the causes of destruction and to guard against them, except through the lawful ways; such as jihad and others.
