“We returned from the lesser jihad to the greater jihad”

What is the authenticity of the hadith: ?

Answer:
Al-Bayhaqi narrated it with a weak chain. Al-Hafiz al-Iraqi stated this in his commentary on *Ihya' 'Ulum al-Din*. Al-'Ajiluni transmitted it from him in *Kashf al-Khafa'*. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “It is a statement by Ibrahim ibn Abi 'Ubbadah, not a hadith.” Al-'Ajiluni also transmitted this from al-Hafiz in *al-Kashf*. This is a summary of what al-'Ajiluni mentioned.
In al-Bayhaqi’s narration, it says: “They said, ‘What is the greater jihad?’ He said: .” Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi narrated it with the wording: They said: “What is the greater jihad?” He said: Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi narrated it with the wording: They said: “What is the greater jihad?” He said: , and both of them narrated it from Jabir, as stated in *Kashf al-Khafa'*.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said in *al-Fatawa*, vol. 11, p. 197: “As for the hadith that some narrate that he said during the expedition to Tabuk: It has no basis, and none of the people of knowledge of the sayings and actions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated it.
