Question:
We have a shaykh whom Allah has granted knowledge, but he curses the shaykhs who disagree with him, specifically naming Shaykh Nasir al-Din al-Albani, warning against him in his talks almost every night during Ramadan, and claiming that this is the opinion of all the nobles regarding al-Albani, and that he is merely a book dealer. So what is your answer and your opinion, O honorable Shaykh, regarding al-Albani, so that we may inform him, and so that we may inform the many attendees of the lesson?
Answer:
In the name of Allah, and praise is to Allah. Shaykh Nasir al-Din al-Albani is among the special, trustworthy brothers of ours, known for knowledge, virtue, and concern for the noble hadith, in terms of authenticating and weakening it. He is not infallible; indeed, he may err in some of his authentications and weakenings. However, it is not permissible to curse him, blame him, or backbite about him. Rather, it is prescribed to pray for him for more success and rectification of intention and action. Whoever finds a clear error on his part with evidence, he must advise him and write to him about it, acting on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): This hadith was narrated by Muslim. And on his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih al-Bukhari 6951 This hadith. And the saying of Jarir ibn Abdullah al-Bajali (may Allah be pleased with him) : I pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to establish prayer, give zakah, and give sincere advice to every Muslim. It is agreed upon that both are authentic.
And it is known that the believing men and women are allies of one another, especially the people of knowledge; for Allah the Exalted said: [Surah al-Tawbah: 71].
So it is obligatory for everyone to advise one another and enjoin truth, to point out the error of the one who errs, and to guide him to the correct path according to the evidence of the Shari'ah. May Allah guide them all.
