The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book Riyad al-Salihin: "Chapter on the Prohibition of Riding the Jalalah"
The jalalah is the animal that eats jalah, meaning excrement; that is, it eats the impurities of humans, donkey dung, and the like. The custom is that when it eats this, something of its body or its feet or the like becomes contaminated. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited riding it. Likewise, eating its meat is prohibited if it is a free-range chicken that eats excrement and impurities and feeds on them; then it is considered a jalalah, and eating its meat is disliked, either as a disliked act of avoidance (makruh tanzih) or as a forbidden act (makruh tahrim). However, if it eats both pure and impure food, and the majority of its feed is pure, then it is not a jalalah; rather, it is permissible, and there is no harm in it. This includes what some poultry owners do, giving them spilled blood, but it is not the majority of their food; rather, the majority of their food is pure. They only give them this to strengthen or grow them, so it does not become forbidden or disliked by this, because if the majority is pure, the ruling follows the majority. This is the jalalah. The prohibition regarding it is concerning riding, for the sake of avoidance (tanzih). As for eating it, it is either a disliked act of avoidance or a forbidden act, according to the disagreement among scholars on this matter. However, the condition is that the majority of its feed must be the impure thing. If it is less than the pure food, there is no harm in it. And success is from Allah.
