The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
He (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book *Riyad al-Saliheen* " Chapter on the dislike of hanging a bell on beasts of burden and their like, and the dislike of carrying a dog or a bell on a journey " Then he mentioned the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him)
The bell is well known; it is the thing hung on beasts of burden that has a specific ringing sound which brings excitement, pleasure, and enjoyment of its sound. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited this by warning against it, informing that the angels do not accompany a group in which there is a bell, because with the walking and trotting of the beasts, it produces a kind of music and melody. It is well known that musical instruments are forbidden. As for carrying a dog, it has been mentioned previously that the angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog, except for the excluded dogs: the dog for guarding, for herding, and for hunting. There is no harm in that.
As for what is in alarm clocks and their like, it does not fall under the prohibition because it is not hung on animals, but rather it is timed for a specific time to give notice. Likewise, what is at doors for asking permission; some doors have a bell for asking permission. This is also permissible and does not fall under the prohibition because it is not hung on a beast or its like, and it does not produce the pleasure that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited. It is found in some telephones when waiting; if you dial and the person is not present, it says "please wait" and then you hear music. This is forbidden because music is from musical instruments and is forbidden. But if a person cannot reach the one he wants except through this, the sin is on the one who set it up. However, it is recommended for the one who hears it to advise the owner of the telephone and say, "Disconnect this bell and make it wait. Say 'wait' and let it be silent until the desired person speaks." As for what is used for waiting on the telephone, sometimes reciting the Qur'an; if you dial, you hear verses from the Qur'an, it says "please wait" and then you hear verses from the Qur'an. This is a degradation of the words of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), where it is made like a tool to indicate waiting. The Qur'an was revealed for something more noble and greater than this; it was revealed to reform hearts and deeds, not to be made a means for waiting on the telephone or otherwise. Also, a person may call who does not honor the Qur'an or care about it, and it may be burdensome for him to hear anything from the Book of Allah. Then a Christian or a disbeliever, a Buddhist or other, may call and hear this Qur'an and think it is a song because he does not know; he may not even be Arab. There is no doubt that this is a degradation of the Qur'an, and the one who placed the Qur'an for the purpose of waiting should be advised and told, "Fear Allah. The words of Allah are too noble to be made a tool for listening or waiting." But if a wise saying or a narrated hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is placed in this waiting, there is no harm in that, such as placing
Part of a person’s goodness in Islam is his leaving alone that which does not concern him. من حسن إسلام المرء تركه ما لا يعنيه
Sunan Ibn Majah 3976Da’if (Darussalam)
Leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt. دع ما يريبك إلى ما لا يريبك
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5711Sahih (Darussalam)
So he, who saves himself from these doubtful things, saves his religion and his honor من اتقى الشبهات فقد استبرأ لدينه وعرضه
Bulugh al-Maram 16:32
and follow an evil deed with a good one to wipe it out أتبع السيئة الحسنة تمحها
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1987Hasan (Darussalam)
and treat the people with good behavior خالق الناس بخلق حسن

and the like of useful things, or for example, from the sayings of wisdom.
"If there is nothing but the spears to ride on *** then what is the recourse of the desperate but to ride them"
The important thing is that the rulings are broad and numerous. As for making the words of the Lord of the Worlds, which were revealed to reform hearts, deeds, individuals, and nations, into a tool for waiting on a telephone—Glory be to Allah! The Qur'an is too noble to be like that. And Allah is the Guide to the straight path.
