The Virtue of Reciting Surat al-Baqarah in the Home

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This is a female listener to the program who sent this question. The summary of the question—Your Eminence, the Shaykh—is that this female listener says: We recite Surat al-Baqarah in our home, and I heard that whoever recites Surat al-Baqarah in the home, no devil will approach it for three days. The question is: Are we obligated to recite this great surah?

Answer:
It is established in the authentic hadith that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Make some of your prayer in your homes, for the devil flees from the home in which Surat al-Baqarah is recited.
This indicates that reciting Surat al-Baqarah, reciting the Qur'an, and increasing in the remembrance of Allah are among the causes of driving away the devil and protection from his evil. It is prescribed for the woman and the man to have a share of recitation in the home, from reciting the Qur'an and increasing in the remembrance of Allah; because that is among the causes of safety from the evil of the enemy of Allah, the devil. Allah the Exalted says:
And whoever is blinded from remembrance of the Most Merciful - We appoint for him a devil, and he is to him a companion.
[Al-Zukhruf: 36] And the meaning of (ya'ishu) is: he is heedless and turns away. So heedlessness regarding the remembrance of Allah and the recitation of the Qur'an is among the causes of the devils taking hold of a person, and of the abundance of whispers, worries, and cares. And the abundance of reciting the Qur'an, and the abundance of dhikr, tasbih, tahlil, and seeking forgiveness, are among the causes of driving away the devil, and among the causes of the heart being safe from harmful whispers and disturbing thoughts. So we advise those who listen to this program, we advise them to increase in the remembrance of Allah, in reciting the Qur'an by night and day, in all times, in tasbih and tahlil, for this is all among the causes of protection from the enemy of Allah, and among the causes of not having whispers, and among the causes of driving the devils out of your home. Yes.

The presenter : May Allah reward you with good, Your Eminence, the Shaykh! She says in another section, O Your Eminence, the Shaykh: Is it sufficient for us to play a tape of any reciter, and we only listen? And is it required that we recite this surah in one sitting, or do we listen to it continuously from the beginning of the surah to the end of the surah?

The Shaykh : This is the recommended practice: listening. It is recommended for you to listen to the reciter, and if you recite with your own voices, that is better, and praise be to Allah. It is recommended for you to listen to the reciter, to pay attention, to reflect, and to understand. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Abdullah ibn Mas'ud was commanded by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on some days in some gatherings to recite the Qur'an to him. So Abdullah said: O Messenger of Allah! How can I recite to you, when it was revealed to you? He said—(peace and blessings be upon him): I love to hear it from someone else. So Abdullah ibn Mas'ud recited to him the beginning of Surat al-Nisa, until he reached the words of Allah the Exalted: "So how will it be when We bring from every nation a witness, and We bring you as a witness over these people?" [Al-Nisa: 41]. The Prophet said: That is enough. Abdullah ibn Mas'ud said: I turned to him and found his eyes shedding tears, (peace and blessings be upon him)..
And Allah says:
So when the Qur'an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention
[Al-A'raf: 204] So the believer recites... And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Read the Qur'an, for it will come as an intercessor for its people on the Day of Resurrection.
So the believer recites in his home, and prays the voluntary prayers in his home, and increases in tasbih, tahlil, tahmid, seeking forgiveness, and supplication. All of this is among the causes of forgiveness, and among the causes of the pleasure of Allah, and among the causes of the expansion of the chest, and the strength of faith, and among the causes of driving away the devils. Yes.

The presenter : May Allah reward you with good, Your Eminence the Shaykh.
