What act of worship is invalidated by showing off?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner says: We ask about showing off (riya'), which is one of the things that corrupt acts of worship. Does showing off invalidate only the specific act intended for showing off, or does it invalidate all acts of worship, O Shaykh?

Answer:
It invalidates the act of worship that is accompanied by it; if one prays with showing off, or gives charity with showing off, or recites a portion of the Qur'an with showing off, that act is invalid. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the authentic hadith:
The thing I fear most for you is the lesser shirkأخوف ما أخاف عليكم الشرك الأصغر
Bulugh al-Maram 16:48
He was asked about it, and he said:
Riya' (showing off in worship).الرياء
Allah says on the Day of Resurrection to those who show off:
Go to those for whom you were showing off in this world. Will you find any reward with them?اذهبوا إلى من كنتم تراؤون في الدنيا، هل تجدون عندهم من جزاء
Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) :
I am the One, One Who does not stand in need of a partner. If anyone does anything in which he associates anyone else with Me, I shall abandon him with one whom he associates with Allah.أنا أغنى الشركاء عن الشرك، من عمل عملًا أشرك معي فيه غيري؛ تركته وشركه
Sahih Muslim 2985
.
Therefore, the one who recites to be praised and to have that thing he recited spoken well of, with the intention of receiving a reward, or two rewards, or a portion, or more, with that intention, his work in it is nullified; he has no reward, and he bears sin. Likewise, if one enjoining good and forbidding evil, or glorifying and praising Allah, does so while showing off, he has no reward; rather, he bears a burden of sin. We ask Allah for safety from this.

The presenter: May Allah bless you, Shaykh Abdul Aziz.
