Question:
We return at the beginning of this episode to a message we received from the Libyan Jamahiriya, sent by a listener from there. The sender is Hamd Abd al-Sadiq. Our brother Hamd presented some of his questions in a previous episode, and in this episode he has a number of remaining questions. For example, he asks and says: “What is below the ankles is in the Fire.” What is the meaning of this hadith?
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for what follows:
Al-Bukhari narrated in his Sahih, may Allah have mercy on him, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Sunan an-Nasa'i 5331Sahih (Darussalam). This is a severe warning that indicates the prohibition of isbal (letting a garment hang below the ankles) and that it is not permissible for a Muslim to let his clothing hang below the ankles, such as the izar (lower garment), trousers, shirts, and the bisht (cloak). All of this is prohibited; he must not let it hang below the ankles. This is a severe warning: Sunan an-Nasa'i 5331Sahih (Darussalam). His statement: is an example; it is not specific to the izar, but it encompasses the izar, trousers, the shirt, the bisht, and so on. Therefore, it is obligatory for the Muslim to be cautious of this, and his clothing should reach only to the ankles. If he raises it to the middle of the shin, that is better than from the middle of the shin to the ankles. This is the place for a man’s clothing, and it is not permissible for him to lower his clothing below the ankles.
As for the woman, the Sunnah for her is to let her clothing hang down so that it covers her feet, as the Sunnah came from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Yes.
