What is your opinion of the one who says: "It is not permissible for the imam's intention to differ from the intention of the one praying behind him; because there is no evidence that permits a difference in intention, and as for the hadith of Mu'adh..."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : My Shaykh, a person says: It is not permissible for the imam's intention to differ from the intention of the one praying behind him, because the original ruling is that there is no evidence permitting a difference in intention. And as for the hadith of Mu'adh: both of them were praying the 'Isha' prayer, but for Mu'adh it was a voluntary prayer, while he [the imam] was praying it as an obligatory prayer, meaning he prayed the obligatory 'Isha'?!

The Shaykh : May Allah guide you.

The questioner : Yes

The Shaykh : First: Did the intention not differ here?

The questioner : In his opinion, it did not differ.

The Shaykh : No, what do I want with his opinion? May Allah guide you and him.

The questioner : Yes, I have the opinion that it did differ.

The Shaykh : Yes, okay.

The questioner : This one is voluntary and that one is obligatory.

The Shaykh : So what do we want with his opinion? We are conveying it: Is the intention here different or unified? In your view, he says no. How is it not different? If one person intended to pray, and he came to pray the Zuhr prayer and intended to pray a voluntary prayer in the time of Zuhr, while he intended to pray Zuhr but made a mistake and intended the voluntary prayer, is the prayer valid?!

The questioner : No.

The Shaykh : But according to his statement that there is no difference.

The questioner : Yes, he says: He prayed the obligatory 'Isha' prayer, like a child when he prays the obligatory 'Isha' prayer.

The Shaykh : May Allah guide you, why are you repeating the words?!

The questioner : Yes, indeed

The Shaykh : I do not understand what he is saying!!

The questioner : I understood the answer.

The Shaykh : And why are you repeating? Bring it so we can see.

The questioner : But I am far away, even to remember this point of his, which is the issue of comparing it to the prayer of a child.

The Shaykh : My brother, you are not saying anything new. May Allah guide us and you.
