The Conditions of the Word of Tawhid

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
In the last of this questioner's questions, he asks: What are the conditions of the word of tawhid?

Answer:
The word of tawhid (the oneness of Allah) is: *La ilaha illa Allah* (There is no god but Allah). Therefore, one must say it with knowledge and certainty. *La ilaha illa Allah*. Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) said:
So know that there is no god but Allah.
[Muhammad:19]. And He said (Glorified and Exalted is He):
And your God is one God; there is no deity except He, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy.
[al-Baqarah:163]. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah witnesses that there is no deity except Him, and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge - [that He is] maintaining [creation] in justice. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
[Al-Imran:18]. And he said:
but only those who testify to the truth [can benefit], and they know.
[Al-Zukhruf:86]. And he said:
Narrated 'Urban bin Malik: who attended the Badr battle and was from the Ansar, that he came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "O Allah's Apostle! I have lost my eyesight and I lead my people in the prayer (as an Imam). When it rains, the valley which is between me and my people, flows with water, and then I cannot go to their mosque to lead them in the prayer. O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! I wish that you could come and pray in my house so that I may take it as a praying place. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Allah willing, I will do that." The next morning, soon after the sun had risen, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) came with Abu Bakr. The Prophet (ﷺ) asked for the permission to enter and I admitted him. The Prophet (ﷺ) had not sat till he had entered the house and said to me, "Where do you like me to pray in your house?" I pointed at a place in my house whereupon he stood and said, "Allahu Akbar." We lined behind him and he prayed two rak`at and finished it with Taslim. We then requested him to stay for a special meal of Khazira which we had prepared. A large number of men from the adjoining area gathered in the house. One of them said, "Where is Malik bin Ad-Dukhshun?" Another man said, "He is a hypocrite and does not love Allah and His Apostle." The Prophet said, "Do not say so. Do you not think that he has said: "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah," seeking Allah's pleasure? The man said, "Allah and His Apostle know better, but we have always seen him mixing with hypocrites and giving them advice." The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Allah has forbidden the (Hell) Fire for those who testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, seeking Allah's pleasure. "من قال لا إله إلا الله صدقًا من قلبه
Sahih al-Bukhari 5401
And he said:
Whoever dies knowing that there is no god but Allah will enter Paradise.
Musnad Ahmad 464Sahih (Darussalam)
Knowledge, belief, and insight are necessary. Its meaning is: There is no true object of worship except Allah. This is the meaning of *La ilaha illa Allah*.
So the one who says: La ilaha illa Allah, while he worships the awliya (close friends of Allah); he has not said it. Its existence is like its non-existence. It is obligatory that he say it, know its meaning, and act upon it. So the one who says: La ilaha illa Allah, and calls upon the dead, seeks aid from the Prophet, or from al-Badawi, or from al-Husayn, or from 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, or from 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani, or from others among the dead; he has not said it. His saying of it is invalid. It does not benefit him until he says it with knowledge, certainty, truthfulness, and love. Some of them mentioned its seven conditions, saying:
Knowledge, certainty, truthfulness, and sincerity with
Love, submission, and acceptance of it,
So it is obligatory to have knowledge; because its meaning is: There is no true object of worship except Allah. And it is obligatory to have certainty, being certain that there is no true object of worship except Allah, with no doubt in him. It is obligatory that he knows, and it is obligatory to have truthfulness. He says it while being truthful that there is no true object of worship except Allah, not like the hypocrites, but he believes it. He says it with knowledge, certainty, and truthfulness that there is no true object of worship except Allah, with love. He loves Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) with a sincere love that necessitates sincerity to Him, obedience to Him, and following His Shari'ah. And likewise acceptance: he accepts it, is pleased with it, and does not reject it. He submits to acting upon what the word indicates regarding the tawhid of Allah, sincerity to Him, obeying His commands, and leaving His prohibitions. For this reason:
Knowledge, certainty, and sincerity with you,
Love, submission, and acceptance of it,
And the meaning of sincerity is: that he directs his deeds to Allah and singles Him out for them, the Exalted, excluding everything else. So he does not worship except Allah, does not pray except for Allah, does not give zakah except for Allah, does not fast except for Allah, and so on. He is sincere to Allah alone in his deeds. So these conditions are obligatory:
Knowledge, certainty, and sincerity with you,
Love, submission, and acceptance of it,
Some of them mentioned an eighth condition:
And the eighth is your disbelief in what
Other than the Divine, from things, he has made them partners
This eighth condition was stated by our Shaykh, Shaykh Sa'd ibn Hamd ibn 'Atiq (may Allah have mercy on him):
And the eighth is your disbelief in what
Other than the Divine, from things, he has made them partners
And this is the meaning of His saying, the Exalted:
So whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in itفَمَنْ يَكْفُرْ بِالطَّاغُوتِ وَيُؤْمِنْ بِاللَّهِ فَقَدِ اسْتَمْسَكَ بِالْعُرْوَةِ الْوُثْقَى لا انفِصَامَ لَهَا
[al-Baqarah:256]. And this is the meaning of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who professed that there is no god but Allah and made a denial of everything which the people worship beside Allah, his property and blood became inviolable, an their affairs rest with Allah.
Sahih Muslim 23a
.
So it is obligatory that he say: La ilaha illa Allah, while he disavows the worship of other than Allah. He disbelieves in the worship of other than Allah, denies it, and believes in its invalidity. And this is also apparent from the seven conditions, for sincerity necessitates disbelief in the worship of other than Allah, its denial, and belief in its invalidity. So the truthful one is the one who singles out Allah with worship and believes in the invalidity of the worship of other than Allah.
The eighth is included in sincerity, but mentioning the eighth is for the sake of perfection and completeness. Otherwise, it is included in sincerity. For the sincere one is the one who singles out Allah with worship, believes in the invalidity of the worship of other than Allah, and disbelieves in it. Yes.
