Is there a standard for the amount of profit in trade?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
First: Know, may Allah preserve you, that I love you for the sake of Allah.
Second: We would like you, may your excellence be honored, to clarify the amount of profit in what traders trade in, and whether there is a specific standard for the amount of profit or not; because some of the traders now, may Allah guide them, are making profits many times over what they bought it for? We ask for detail, may Allah preserve you?
Answer:
The Shaykh: First: We say: May Allah love you for the sake of which you loved us for. It came in the hadith: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:, or as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said. And if he informs him, let him say: May Allah love you for the sake of which you loved us for. We ask Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) to make us and you among those who love one another for His majesty, and may Allah love you for the sake of which you loved us for.
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith:. And likewise, if a woman is invited by one of status and beauty, she says: I fear Allah. This is from the seven whom Allah will shade in His shade, Sahih al-Bukhari 1423, meaning: he gives charity and strives for secrecy, and if he does it openly, there is no harm. Allah the Exalted said: [al-Baqarah:271], so concealing is better. And if he does it openly for a benefit, such as charity in the mosque so that people follow him, or in a gathering so that people follow him, then this is better. And the seventh: Sahih al-Bukhari 660, he remembered Allah while no one was with him, so he wept out of fear of Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He).
And in the other hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: On the Day of Resurrection: Where are those who love each other for My majesty? Today I will shade them in My shade on a day when there is no shade except My shade.
As for the second question: There is no limited limit for profit. No determination of profit has come in the Shari'ah: not by a third, nor by a quarter, nor by anything else. Some of the jurists—some of the scholars—said: a third, but there is no evidence for it. And what is better for the believer is gentleness, and not being greedy, and being content with little profit, and being gentle with his brothers. This is what is prescribed, and this is what is best: that he seeks the sufficient little profit that helps him in buying and selling, and helps him in paying the wages of the shop workers and the like, and it is not much that burdens people. He seeks and strives for the appropriate profit. This is what is prescribed for the trader and for the non-trader.
As for the determination: It has no limited limit. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) bought one camel for two camels, from the camels of zakah, one camel for two camels. And there is no harm in selling what he bought for one hundred for two hundred if circumstances change, or if a person comes who is unjust like this thing, and he is what he wants to sell, but for his sake he sold it to him with a profit of one hundred in one hundred, there is no harm. There is no limited limit in it. You may have a car that you want and you have no desire to sell it, then a person comes who has a desire for it, and he loves to buy it even if it is for a lot, there is no harm in that. And so with his house, and so with his land. But if a person is gentle and takes the appropriate profit that suits his condition and his expenses, then that is better.

مَن أحبَّ منكم أحدًا فليُخبرهAnd the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith:
Seven whom Allah will shade in His shade on a day when there is no shade except His shade: a just imam, and a young man who grew up in the worship of Allah, and a man whose heart is attached to the mosques, and two men who loved one another for the sake of Allah, they gathered upon that and separated upon it—this is an example—and a man whom a woman of status and beauty invited, and he said: I fear Allah
سبعة يُظلُّهم الله في ظلِّه يوم لا ظلَّ إلا ظله: إمام عادل، وشابٌّ نشأ في عبادة الله، ورجلٌ قلبه مُعلَّقٌ بالمساجد، ورجلان تحابَّا في الله، اجتمعا على ذلك، وتفرَّقا عليه -هذا مثالٌ- ورجلٌ دعته امرأةٌ ذات منصبٍ وجمالٍ فقال: إني أخاف اللهa person who practices charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given
