If Ibn 'Umar is not followed in the matter of the Sunnahs of custom due to his contradiction of his father, why did we follow him in the matter of taking what exceeds a fistful from the beard?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The student : The issue of the Sunnah of custom and the Sunnah of worship!

The Shaykh : Yes.
The student : I said that Ibn 'Umar's action is not followed.

The Shaykh: Yes.
The student : Because of his contradiction.

The Shaykh : Of his father.
The student : His father?

The Shaykh: Yes.
The student : It is a great scholar regarding the fistful, the hadith of the fistful of the beard, why did he make us follow him, why did we follow Ibn 'Umar's action?

The Shaykh : For many reasons that only the scholars know. The first reason is that he narrated his saying (peace be upon him):
And let the beards grow وأعفوا اللحى
, and Ibn 'Umar, in his intense following of the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), reached that degree which contains some exaggeration, out of love for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), until he followed him in the Sunnahs of custom. So if he had not seen the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taking from his beard, he would not have been able to contradict his saying:
And let the beards grow وأعفوا اللحى
, if this letting the beard grow were absolute. Is this clear up to here?
The student : Yes, yes, Shaykh.

The Shaykh : This is one point.
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh-- And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah and His blessings --
And the second is that he is not alone in this issue, so that this issue can be compared to his other issues in which he followed the Messenger (peace be upon him) in the Sunnahs of custom. He is not alone, so that it can be said: "Since we followed him here and did not follow him there?" No, with him is also Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he is also one of the narrators of the hadith of letting the beard grow!
The student : Excuse me, Shaykh, with him in the Sunnahs of custom or in the fistful?

The Shaykh : In the fistful.
The student : In the fistful.

The Shaykh : If it were in the Sunnahs of custom, it would strengthen our argument against us, and we are in the process of strengthening our argument.
The student : Yes, Shaykh, meaning the Sunnahs of custom, what is the ruling on the one who acts in the manner of Ibn 'Umar? What is its ruling, I mean?

The Shaykh : We do not follow him in that. He is a mujtahid, and the mujtahid, if he is correct, has two rewards, and if he errs, he has one reward. So it is not permissible for us to declare sinful anyone who follows the Messenger (peace be upon him) in the Sunnahs of custom. But we say: that is not from the Sunnahs of worship, and we do not worship Allah (Mighty and Majestic) except with what He has prescribed for us. This is from one aspect. From another aspect, the Sunnahs of custom cannot be limited or enumerated. So from the Sunnahs of custom, for example:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to wear sandals that had two straps. أن النبي - صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم - كان يلبس نعلين لهما قبالان
, do you know the sandals that have two straps?
The student : Yes, Shaykh, it is well known.

The Shaykh : Okay, I do not know what you call it in Iraq, the Najdi sandal where the big toe goes into a hole.
The student : Yes, yes.

The Shaykh : And the four fingers.
The student : And the four fingers from the other side.

The Shaykh : What is its name?
The student : By Allah, O Shaykh.
Another student: In Syria we call it a dayri.

The Shaykh : How?
The student : A dayri.

The Shaykh : Where do they call it that?
The student : In Syria.

The Shaykh : In Syria. We are now talking about Iraq, what do they call it?
The student : They call it the Abu al-Asba' sandal.

The Shaykh : Abu al-Asba', okay, this is the Abu al-Asba' sandal.
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : It is the one about which Anas ibn Malik says:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had sandals that had two straps. كان لرسول الله - صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم - نعلان لهما قبالان
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 26:220
Do you know the straps? This is a strap, and this is a strap.
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : Okay, so now.
