Discussion on the intended meaning of the hadith (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade drinking from a vessel with a chip)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : We want to talk about the chip in the vessel.
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : Any vessel that remains chipped and has a notch: if the chip extends, then it is not permissible to use it for liquids, only for solids. However, if the chip does not extend beyond a certain amount, and we use this container to pour water up to below the chip and drink from the other end, away from the chip, then it is permissible; otherwise, from the chip, it is not.
The student : You understood it this way; you understand the chip.

The Shaykh : Yes, by Allah, that is how I understand it. So, there is another understanding that we might hear and discuss.
The student : Because I was with Shaykh AliAl-Halabi : with Shaykh 'Abd al-Muhsin al-'Abbad in his house, and his son 'Abd Allah brought a cup that was not even notched, but was broken at the edge. He said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade drinking from a vessel with a chip." So 'Abd Allah threw it out the window. I understood that any broken vessel, or even what falls under the general meaning.

The Shaykh : You may understand it as you wish, but is this issue one that the jurist is inclined to think has a rational meaning, or is it a devotional act? The ruling branches out based on this disagreement. Whoever sees the issue as a devotional act does as the one who narrated from him did. And whoever sees the issue as having a rational meaning, as I understand it, must have this detail. The person and what is seen now after this explanation.

The questioner : The cause in drinking is harm.

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner : That befalls the drinker?

The Shaykh : Yes, and harm is of two types:

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : Either direct harm, if he places his mouth on the chip, or indirect harm, which has become clear in the modern era, where this is a place for germs that are not visible to the naked eye.

The questioner : So you see it as having a rational meaning.

The Shaykh: Yes.
The student : Well, we have finished this issue, my brothers.
