The Criterion for Ruling That a Person Is an Innovator

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
A message was received by the program from one of the listening brothers. Al-Mu'tasim Jawada Yusuf from Kuwait sent several questions, one of which says: Is everyone who commits a religious innovation called an innovator, and when is the term "innovator" applied to a person?
Answer: The original ruling is that one who commits a religious innovation is called an innovator; this is the original ruling. One who commits a religious innovation is called an innovator. However, if he is ignorant, he is taught, and when he repents, he is not called an innovator. If he persists, he is called an innovator according to his innovation. For example, the one who persists in celebrating the Mawlid or other Mawlids is called an innovator until he repents. The one who persists in building on graves, or praying at graves, or building mosques on them, or pouring perfume on them, is called an innovator. Likewise, the one who commits a religious innovation that Allah has forbidden is called an innovator. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Beware of newly invented matters, for every religious innovation is misguidance.إياكم ومحدثات الأمور فإن كل بدعة ضلالة
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 17:1232
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith:
The best of the speech is embodied in the Book of Allah, and the best of the guidance is the guidance given by Muhammad. And the most evil affairs are their innovations; and every innovation is error.أما بعد -يقول في خطبة الجمعة- أما بعد فإن خير الحديث كتاب الله وخير الهدي هدي محمد ﷺ وشر الأمور محدثاتها وكل بدعة ضلالة
Sahih Muslim 867a
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملًا ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
.
So the Muslim complies with the command of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and supports what he (peace and blessings be upon him) said. He warns against religious innovations and calls their people innovators until they repent to Allah . The ignorant one is taught, and whoever repents, Allah accepts his repentance.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
