The Prescribed Dhikr After the Obligatory Prayer and the Ruling on Adding to It

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Our brothers from Unaizah ask, saying: When a person finishes the obligatory prayer, he recites certain dhikr. What are these dhikr? What is the ruling on one who forgets some of them? And what is the ruling on one who intentionally adds to them?
May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in authentic hadiths that he used to say, when he finished the obligatory prayer of Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr: "I seek forgiveness from Allah" three times.
O Allah, You are As-Salam, and from you is As-Salam. You are blessed, O One of Magnificence and Generosity.
Sunan Abi Dawud 1512Sahih (Al-Albani)
This is established from him in the hadith of Thawban, and part of it is established from the hadith of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). So the Sunnah for all who pray—whether imam, ma'mum, or praying alone—is that when he finishes the obligatory prayer, he says:
O Allah, You are As-Salam, and from you is As-Salam. You are blessed, O One of Magnificence and Generosity.
Sunan Abi Dawud 1512Sahih (Al-Albani)
Then, if he is the imam, he turns to the people, turns toward them, and gives them his face.
And it is established from him that he used to say after this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say after this:
There is no god but Allah, alone, without partner, to Him belongs the dominion, and to Him belongs the praise, and He is over all things capable. There is no power and no strength except by Allah. There is no god but Allah, and we worship none but Him. To Him belongs the blessing, and to Him belongs the favor, and to Him belongs the good praise. There is no god but Allah, we are sincere to Him in religion, even if the disbelievers hate it. O Allah, there is no one who can prevent what You have given, and there is no one who can give what You have prevented, and the wealth of the wealthy does not benefit him against You.
Sahih Muslim 594a
After Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr. All of this is Sunnah, it is not obligatory, it is Sunnah. If he stood up and did not recite them, his prayer is valid, but this is the Sunnah.
Then he says: "Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar" thirty-three times, after each of the five prayers. "Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar" thirty-three times, the total is ninety-nine, and he completes the hundred by saying:
There is no god but Allah, alone, without any partner. To Him belong the Kingdom and praise, and He has power over everything
Muwatta Malik 20:131
This is what is prescribed for men and women, in travel and residence, after the five prayers.
And the Sunnah is to raise the voice with this. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) used to raise his voice with this so that those around him could hear it, those around the mosque could hear it. People would hear when they finished the prayer, they would hear their dhikr. Whoever was outside the mosque would hear their dhikr. Ibn Abbas said: "Raising the voice with dhikr when the people finished the obligatory prayer was the practice in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." And Ibn Abbas said: "I would know when they had finished it when I heard it." This is the Sunnah, raising the voice with this in a moderate way, so that the people around the mosque know that they have finished the prayer, and some learn from others, and some remind others. If the voice is raised, the ignorant one learns, and the forgetful one is reminded.
And it is recommended in Maghrib and Fajr to add the ten tahlils. Specifically in Fajr and Maghrib, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to add ten tahlils, which are:
None has the right to be worshipped by Allah, Alone, without partner, to Him belongs all that exists, and to Him belongs the praise, [He gives life and causes death,] and He has power over all thingsلا إله إلا الله، وحده لا شريك له، له الملك، وله الحمد، يحيي ويميت، وهو على كل شيء قدير
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3553Sahih (Darussalam)
Ten times, at the time of finishing Fajr and Maghrib, and after saying:
I seek forgiveness from Allah, I seek forgiveness from Allah, I seek forgiveness from Allah. O Allah, You are Peace, and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, O Owner of Majesty and Honor. He recites these ten.
Along with saying:
Sunan Ibn Majah 3885Da'if (Darussalam)
And along with saying:
O Allah! No-one can withhold what You give, and none can give what You withhold, and the fortune of a man of means is useless before Youاللهم لا مانع لما أعطيت، ولا معطي لما منعت، ولا ينفع ذا الجد منك الجد
Sahih al-Bukhari 6615
And along with saying:
There is none worthy of worship except Allah (SWT), and we worship none but Him, the source of blessing and kindness and the One Who is deserving of all good praise. There is none worthy of worship except Allah (SWT), and we are sincere in faith and devotion to Him even though the disbelievers detest it.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1340Sahih (Darussalam)
Along with all of this, he recites it by saying:
None has the right to be worshipped by Allah, Alone, without partner, to Him belongs all that exists, and to Him belongs the praise, [He gives life and causes death,] and He has power over all thingsلا إله إلا الله، وحده لا شريك له، له الملك، وله الحمد، يحيي ويميت وهو على كل شيء قدير
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3553Sahih (Darussalam)
Ten times after Maghrib and after Fajr, in travel and residence, both men and women.
And it is also recommended to recite Ayat al-Kursi after every prayer,
Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence
[Al-Baqarah: 255] to its end. And it is recommended to recite:
Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One,قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَد
[Al-Ikhlas: 1] and the two Mu'awwidhat after every prayer,
Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One,قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَد
[Al-Ikhlas: 1] and
Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreakقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ
[Al-Falaq: 1]
Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind,قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ
[An-Nas: 1] for both men and women; because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) encouraged them. But in Maghrib and Fajr, the three surahs are repeated three times. In Fajr and Maghrib, they are repeated three times:
Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One,قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَد
[Al-Ikhlas: 1] three times, and
Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreakقُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ
[Al-Falaq: 1] three times, and
Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind,قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ
[An-Nas: 1] three times. This is the best. All of it is voluntary; if one leaves it, he owes nothing.
All of these dhikr are recommended. If one leaves them, he owes nothing. And if he recites a lot of dhikr after that, it does no harm. If he remembered Allah a lot, "Alhamdulillah" thousands of times, hundreds of times, "Alhamdulillah," but the Sunnah is to adhere to these. So if he adds to them after reciting them, he adds to them in his place, or on the way, or in his house, or in any place. All of it is good. All dhikr is good and fine, but these are specific. So if he wishes to add other dhikr after that: "Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illa Allah, Allahu Akbar," or he says: "Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi, Subhan Allah al-Azim," or he says: "La ilaha illa Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir," all of this is fine, and there is no limit to it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The dearest phrases to Allah are four: Subhan Allah (Hallowed be Allah), Al-Hamdulillah (Praise be to Allah), La ilaha illa-Allah (There is no deity but Allah), Allahu Akbar (Allah is Greater).
Sahih Muslim 2137a
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Subhan-Allah walhamdu lillahi, wa la ilaha illallahu, wa Allahu Akbar, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billahil-‘Aliyil-‘Azimالباقيات الصالحات: سبحان الله، والحمد لله، ولا إله إلا الله، والله أكبر، ولا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله العلي العظيم
Sunan Ibn Majah 3878Sahih (Darussalam)
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Two words which are light on the tongue and heavy in the Balance, and beloved to the Most Merciful: Subhan-Allah wa bi hamdihi, Subhan-Allahil-'Azim (Glory and praise is to Allah, glory is to Allah the Almighty).
Sunan Ibn Majah 3806Sahih (Darussalam)
Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. He mentions a specific phrase of dhikr, if you would be so kind, O Shaykh, and say: If I say, for example: "Allahu Akbar kabiran, wa Alhamdulillah kathiran, wa Subhan Allah al-Azim wa bihamdihi bukran wa asilan, wa lillahil hamd," if I add a dhikr like this, does it affect [the ruling], or not?

The Shaykh: There is no blame in this, but he should recite the prescribed dhikr separately, and recite what he added separately, in a different manner. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah bless you.
