Question:
A message from the listener (Luluwa J. L.) from al-Qassim - Buraydah. We presented some of her questions in a previous session, and in this session she asks and says: Is this the meaning of the hadith: "Whoever covers a Muslim, Allah will cover him," meaning: if a person does something wrong or a shameful act and I cover it up, will Allah cover me? I hope you will clarify this for me. May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
Yes, this is a valid hadith narrated by Muslim from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
He who alleviates the suffering of a brother out of the sufferings of the world, Allah would alleviate his suffering from the sufferings of the Day of Resurrection, and he who finds relief for one who is hard-pressed, Allah would make things easy for him in the Hereafter, and he who conceals (the faults) of a Muslim, Allah would conceal his faults in the world and in the Hereafterمن نفس عن مؤمن كربة من كرب الدنيا نفس الله عنه كربة من كرب يوم القيامة، ومن يسر على معسر يسر الله عليه في الدنيا والآخرة، ومن ستر مسلمًا ستره الله في الدنيا والآخرة
Sahih Muslim 2699a
.
And in the two Sahihs, from the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
A Muslim is the brother of a fellow-Muslim. He should neither commit oppression upon him nor ruin him, and he who meets the need of a brot'ier, Allah would meet big needs, and he who relieved a Muslim from hardship Allah would relieve him from the hardships to which he would be put on the Day of Resurrection, and he who did not expose (the follies of a Muslim) Allah would conceal his follies on the Day of Resurrection.
Sahih Muslim 2580
.
This is what is prescribed: if a person sees from his brother in Allah or his sister in Allah a 'awrah (the part of the body that must be covered) - meaning: a sin - he should not expose him, nor spread it among the people. Rather, he should cover for him, advise him, direct him to good, and call him to repent to Allah from it. He should not expose him among the people. Whoever does this and covers for his brother, Allah will cover for him in this world and the Hereafter; because the reward is of the same kind as the deed.
As for those who display sins and do not feel shame, and display them among the people, these people have exposed themselves, so they are not a place for covering, like the one who drinks intoxicants among the people in the markets, in the shops and gatherings. This person has exposed himself - we ask Allah for well-being - and likewise the one who commits other sins openly and does not care. His case is referred to the authorities if they deter such people and establish the hudud (the fixed Qur'anic punishments) upon him. His case is referred, and he is not a place for covering if he has displayed his shameful act and announced it - we ask Allah for well-being. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
