What is the evidence for the prohibition of smoking?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is the argument of the one who says that smoking is forbidden in the Shari'ah of Allah the Exalted?

Answer:
His argument is that it is harmful, and it is a narcotic in some cases, and an intoxicant in some cases, and the original ruling regarding it is... harm. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
It was narrated from 'Ubadah bin Samit that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ruled: “There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.”لا ضرر، ولا ضرار
Sunan Ibn Majah 2340Da'if (Darussalam)
, so the meaning is: anything that harms a person is prohibited: whether it is poison, or smoke, or something else that harms him, or a narcotic, or something else; because of His saying, Mighty and Majestic:
and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]وَلَا تُلْقُوا بِأَيْدِيكُمْ إِلَى التَّهْلُكَةِ
[al-Baqarah:195], and His saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
It was narrated from 'Ubadah bin Samit that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ruled: “There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.”لا ضرر، ولا ضرار
Sunan Ibn Majah 2340Da'if (Darussalam)
.
And for this reason, the scholars of verification among the people of knowledge have forbidden smoking; because of the great harm in it that the smoker knows, and the doctors know, and everyone who drinks it or uses it knows: from the many diseases in his chest and elsewhere, and it may cause a stroke, and it may cause many harms, and it causes much coughing, and constant, necessary swelling. All of this we have known, and a great multitude who we cannot count have informed us of it, from those who use nicotine or other types of smoking. All its types are harmful: whether as poison, or drinking, or shisha, or other types of smoking. All of it is harmful, and all of it must be prevented.
And it is obligatory for doctors to advise regarding it. It is obligatory for the doctor not to use it, and to advise the patients and others. And if the patients see him using it, it becomes one of the causes of evil; it becomes a call to it by his action.
