The ruling on a woman wearing a niqab instead of the hijab

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This questioner says: In my country, some women wear what they call a niqab: it is a piece of black cloth, and the size of this niqab is one meter by one meter. Does that suffice in place of the hijab, even though it covers the face, but the hands and the upper half of the face remain exposed? Please give us a ruling, O honorable Shaykh?

Answer:
It is necessary to have clothing that covers her entirely, covering her head, face, and hands from men, whether it is called a niqab or something else. She must take care to cover herself, and to cover her hands and feet—yes—just as she covers her face, she covers her hands and feet; because it is all 'awrah (the part of the body that must be covered). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ... says:
A woman is an awrahالمرأة عورة
. Yes.
