The Ruling on Those Who Claim to Know the Locations of Water

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A questioner says: Some people claim knowledge of what is beneath the earth and above it, and they identify the locations of wells, especially in desert and mountainous areas. Are they to be believed? Is this from fortune-telling?

Answer:
The claim of knowing water is based on their independent reasoning; they perceive the signs of water in the land, which are recognized by indicators. There are signs and indicators that specialists know. They may err, and they may be correct, but if their knowledge is good, the majority of the time they are correct. As Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) and others mentioned, there are indicators by which the locations of water are known.
