Question:
What is reported regarding the number of rak'ahs in tarawih in Ramadan. The questioner says?
Answer:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not exceed eleven rak'ahs in Ramadan or in any other time, and sometimes he prayed thirteen, as Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said. The maximum that is reported is thirteen. This is what is established. If one prays more, there is no harm, due to his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Ibn Majah 1319Sahih (Darussalam), and he did not specify a limit. However, his practice (peace and blessings be upon him) was to pray eleven, and sometimes he would pray thirteen. He would say the closing salam after every two, and complete the prayer with one witr in Ramadan and in other times. If one prays twenty and completes with three, or prays thirty or forty, and completes with one or three, there is no harm in any of this, due to the generality of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan Abi Dawud 1326Sahih (Al-Albani).

The night prayer is (to be offered) two by two.
صلاة الليل مثنى مثنىPrayer during the night should consist of pairs of rak'ahs, but if one of you fears the morning is near he should pray one rak'ah which will make his prayer an odd number for him.
