Advice for a Student of Sacred Knowledge

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
I am a university student, and I wish and hope that Allah will grant me success in studying sacred knowledge, gaining understanding of the religion, and memorizing the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His trustworthy Messenger. So what is your advice to me and to those like me, O Shaykh?

Answer:
My advice to you and to those like you is to do what you mentioned: to take care to gain understanding of the religion, to study knowledge with scholars, and to memorize whatever is easy of the books after the Book of Allah . The most important and greatest thing is to take care of the Qur'an, and for the student of knowledge to turn to it with reflection, understanding, recitation, and benefit, for it is the root of all good and the root of knowledge. So the student of knowledge must take care of the Book of Allah with the utmost care. Then the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), for it is the second root and the second path. So one must have both of these.
Then gaining understanding of that through study, reading through good tafsirs, studying with scholars whatever is difficult of the verses and hadiths, reviewing the beneficial books in this field, and keeping the company of the righteous who help you in this good.
This is the advice for you and those like you: that you take care of knowledge, and the greatest of that is taking care of the Book of Allah through recitation, memorization, reflection, understanding, and reviewing the beneficial, well-known, good tafsirs, and studying that with the people of knowledge regarding whatever is difficult. Then taking care of the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and memorizing whatever is easy of it, such as Bulugh al-Maram by al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, which is a good and precise book, and the like of 'Umdat al-Hadith by al-Hafiz 'Abd al-Ghani al-Maqdisi (may Allah have mercy on him). These are great and beneficial books.
And likewise reading the other books above them, such as Muntakha al-Akhbar, the two Sahihs, and the like of that from the books of the people of the Sunnah.
