The Attributes of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) Between the Ambiguous and the Clear

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Are the attributes of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) of the category of the ambiguous (mutashabih) or of the category of the clear (muhkam)?

Answer:
The attributes of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) are of the category of the clear (muhkam), whose meaning the scholars know and explain. As for their modality (kayfiyyah), it is of the category of the ambiguous (mutashabih), which no one knows except Allah. This is, as Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) and other imams said: "The rising above the Throne (istiwa') is known, the modality is unknown, belief in it is obligatory, and asking about it is a religious innovation (bid'ah)." And Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "For I do not know of anyone from the Salaf of the Ummah, nor from the imams—neither Ahmad ibn Hanbal nor anyone else—who classified that as ambiguous (mutashabih)." The meaning of that is that the scholars and imams of the people of the Sunnah and the community (Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah) agreed that the texts of the attributes are not of the ambiguous (mutashabih), but rather that is the saying of the innovators (mubtadi') and the deviant sects that have strayed from the methodology of the Salaf.
