I'tikaf at night only

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 18979 )
Q: We work in a clothing store and in Ramadan, during the last ten days
we are unable to perform i'tikaf during the day due to our work conditions. Is it valid for us to perform i'tikaf at night only
and work in the store during the day?

A: It is permissible to perform i'tikaf, even for just an hour, in a mosque where congregational prayer is held. It is valid to perform i'tikaf without fasting, according to the correct opinion of the scholars; based on what Abdullah ibn 'Umar narrated from 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: "O Messenger of Allah, I vowed in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance to perform i'tikaf for one night in the Sacred Mosque." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:
Fulfill your vow and perform i'tikaf for one nightأوفِ بنذرك فاعتكف ليلة
It was narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim in their (Sahihayn), and this is the wording of al-Bukhari (Vol. 2, p. 260). If fasting were a condition for the validity of i'tikaf, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not have approved his i'tikaf at night only. Accordingly, it is permissible for you to intend i'tikaf at night only, without the day, given what you mentioned, and you will have a reward commensurate with that, if Allah wills. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
