The first question of Fatwa No. ( 18020 )
Q1: We know that fasting six days of Shawwal carries great reward. A woman has days from Ramadan to make up; that is, she broke her fast for six days in Ramadan, and she wants to make them up in Shawwal. Is it permissible for her to combine the intentions, the intention of fasting the make-up days and the intention of fasting the six days of Shawwal, in one go, and fast six days intending them to be both a debt and a reward at the same time? Is combining permissible here, like combining Hajj and 'Umrah?
A1: Fasting six days of Shawwal to make up for what was missed in Ramadan does not count as part of the six-day fast; because one does not begin fasting the six days of Shawwal until after finishing the fasting of Ramadan; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 13:437 Therefore, it is obligatory for one who has something from Ramadan to make up to begin with it, intending the make-up, before fasting the six days of Shawwal. As for the inclusion of the acts of 'Umrah in the acts of Hajj when performing the rites with the intention of combining, that is permissible; because the acts of 'Umrah are part of the acts of Hajj, and the acts of Hajj are broader than the acts of 'Umrah, and due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Jami` at-Tirmidhi 932Sahih (Darussalam) . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
