The questioner : He says: In our time, commercial companies of various types have spread, and many people have invested in them with their money in search of profit, but the thing that happens is that some investors obtain a profit that is not from the work of that company, but from trading in the share certificates they invested in. He sells a certificate whose value is, for example, one hundred riyals for two hundred or more, depending on the value of these certificates at that time. Is this type of dealing correct or not?

The Shaykh : The dealing is valid if the company in which he invested is free from riba (usury or interest).

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : If a person sells his share in the company for a profit, it is permissible and there is no blame on him, but on the condition that it is known to the seller and the buyer. It must be known, for example, that he has ten shares, or fifteen shares of such and such, so that the matter does not remain ambiguous. If it is known, then there is nothing wrong with it, whether that is in companies, real estate investments, or anything else.

The questioner : This is a question from the listener Ali al-Ba'asi, a Sudanese resident in the Kingdom, in Khamis Mushait.
