Fatwa number ( 14486 )
Q: I have a wife who is approximately fifty years old. She was struck with paralysis, a general paralysis affecting her entire body, including her speech, five years ago. Four Ramadans have passed over her and she did not fast due to her inability to do so, and she did not feed people during those months because of our ignorance of the ruling. The illness is still with her in its most severe state , and she is unable to move or speak except by gesture, and we do not understand from her anything except the testimony of faith, which she pronounces. Given the situation as described, I place my hope in Allah and then in your eminence to give me a complete fatwa regarding the specific rulings of worship that apply to this sick woman, and what is obligatory for her in terms of fasting or its substitute in her mentioned condition. May Allah preserve you.
A: If two or more trustworthy doctors confirm that your wife’s illness is not expected to be cured – then she must feed one poor person for each day, the amount being half a sa’ (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of the staple food of the country, for the past days and the future days. We ask Allah for her recovery and for you a great reward. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
