The Ruling on Seeking Nearness to Allah Through the Living

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q42: The questioner says: I read in the book on the prayer for rain that 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), when they faced a drought, would seek rain through al-'Abbas ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib, saying: "O Allah, we used to seek nearness to You through our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and You gave us rain. Now we seek nearness to You through the uncle of our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), so give us rain." What is the authenticity of this? And what is the prayer for rain? May we be rewarded.
A42: This report is authentic. It is established that 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), when they faced a drought, would seek rain through al-'Abbas, saying: "O Allah, we used to seek rain from You through our Prophet, and You gave us rain. Now we seek nearness to You through the uncle of our Prophet, so give us rain," and they would be given rain. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) used to ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was alive to supplicate for them, and they would be given rain. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) died, it became impossible to ask him for supplication, so they turned to al-'Abbas, who was alive, because he was a relative of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him
(peace and blessings be upon him), and they asked him to supplicate. If the questioner had completed the hadith, that would have become clear to him, because 'Umar said: "Rise, O al-'Abbas, and supplicate."
