I took an abandoned child from the hospital and, out of ignorance, included him among my children in the civil registry

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 16980 )
Q: I took an abandoned child from the hospital and, out of ignorance, included him among my children in the civil registry, and named him Abd al-Rahman. My wife was breastfeeding, so I had her breastfeed him. After that, it became clear to me that I had committed an act that contradicts the Shari'ah of Allah and the Sunnah of our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I ask you to inform me about this child and what I should do to rectify
what I did? I do not wish to give him up, as he has become like my other children, and he is now 16 years old.

A: The child mentioned becomes your son through breastfeeding, provided that your wife breastfed him within the first two years and gave him five breastfeedings or more. It is not permissible to include him among your children as your son by blood. It is obligatory for you to go to the authority responsible for issuing civil registry documents in order to remove his name and issue a separate civil registry document for him, independent of yours, in which he is attributed to someone other than you with a name that signifies servitude to Allah, such as: (Abd Allah, and Abd al-Rahman) and the like. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
