The first question of Fatwa No. ( 18576 )
Q1: Is it possible to pray two rak'ahs after the witr?
A1: It is the sunnah (recommended practice) that the witr be the last prayer of the night; based on his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 751b However, if one prays two rak'ahs after the witr, that is permissible; based on what the Imam Ahmad narrated in his Musnad from Abu Umamah who said: , and what he narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) who said: The
. And what Ahmad also narrated from Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her), Mishkat al-Masabih 1284 , and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did that to clarify the permissibility of praying after the witr, and that it does not contradict the hadiths regarding the witr, and that the witr does not cut off voluntary prayer. Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: (And the correct statement is to say: These two rak'ahs follow the course of the sunnah, and the completion of the witr, for the witr is an independent act of worship, especially if it is said to be obligatory. So the two rak'ahs after it follow the course of the sunnah of Maghrib after Maghrib, for it is the witr of the day. So likewise, the two rak'ahs after the witr of the night. And Allah knows best). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
