Q: I came to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan this year for the first time in my life, and by Allah’s grace, He the Exalted facilitated for me work with some people from the group of the Salaf al-Salih (the righteous predecessors). However, I noticed here in Jordan , and specifically among the group of the Salaf al-Salih, some observations regarding prayer that I had not seen in Egypt . Among them is something important that occupied my mind and prompted me to write to you, which is the statement of the Shaykh, the scholar: Nasir al-Din al-Albani (may Allah preserve him and benefit the Ummah with him): (It is not permissible to perform a second congregational prayer after the first congregational prayer that was performed in the mosque ), even though in Egypt and in all the mosques, we used to perform a second and third congregation, and no one objected to that, even in the university mosque. I hope that you will guide me to the correct opinion regarding: Is it permissible to perform a second congregational prayer or not?
A: Performing a second congregational prayer for one of the five prayers has three cases. The first: Establishing a second congregation before the first congregation has finished. This is not permissible because it contradicts the Sunnah, and it is obligatory to perform the prayer with the first congregation. The second: A person arrives at the mosque who missed the mosque’s congregation, and one of them stands up to pray with him as a second congregation. There is a hadith of Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him),
That the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man praying alone and said: “Is there no man who would give charity to this man by praying with him?”أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أبصر رجلاً يصلي وحده فقال: ألا رجل يتصدق على هذا فيصلي معه
, narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi with its meaning, and he said: It is a good hadith, and he added in it: (So a man stood up and prayed with him). The third: One of the mosque’s congregation delays performing the prayer with the imam in congregation in order to wait for those who did not catch the prayer in congregation so that he can lead them. A man delays for this purpose, or arranging for it is an innovation (bid'ah) that is not known in the early period of this Ummah and its predecessors. It is an innovation that is not permissible to perform or to approve, and it is a great deprivation for this latecomer, causing him to delay what Allah has made obligatory upon him, which is performing the prayer in its time in congregation in the mosque. It is obligatory for him to pray with the mosque’s congregation. If the congregation is missed by any of the Muslims, let one of them pray with them, as in the second case. And Allah knows best. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
