The followers’ taslim after the imam’s first taslim

Fatwa number ( 18735 )
Q: Some of the worshippers say the taslim after the imam’s first taslim, then when the imam says the second one, they say the second one. They say: This is the most correct view regarding the taslim. Knowing that most of the worshippers wait for the second taslim and then say it, what is your clarification of this matter?
A : It is reported in (al-Sunan) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
The key to prayer is purification; its beginning is takbir and its end is taslim.مفتاح الصلاة الطهور، وتحريمها التكبير، وتحليلها التسليم
Sunan Abi Dawud 61Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)
, and what is established from his (peace and blessings be upon him) practice is that he used to say the taslim twice, to his right and to his left. This indicates that both taslims are a pillar of the prayer, and the imam does not complete the prayer until he says the second taslim. Thus, the follower’s taslim after the imam’s first taslim is a taslim before the completion of the prayer – so it is not permissible for the follower to say the taslim before the imam’s second taslim; because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
I am your Imam, so do not precede me in bowing and prostration and in standing and turning (faces, i. e. In pronouncing salutation)إني إمامكم فلا تسبقوني بالركوع ولا بالسجود، ولا بالقيام ولا بالانصراف
Sahih Muslim 426a
So it is not permissible for the follower to do that. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
