Q: What is the ruling on the imam saying in the loud prayers—the basmalah—(In the name of the Most Merciful, the Compassionate) instead of the basmalah: (In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Compassionate)?
A: The Muslim says (In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Compassionate) in prayer and elsewhere, as it was transmitted in the Noble Qur'an and the Prophetic hadiths. Whoever omits the Name of Allah and says (In the name of the Most Merciful, the Compassionate) has erred and has made this dhikr deficient, and has contradicted what was transmitted in the Book and the Sunnah. His prayer is valid, if Allah wills; because the basmalah is a separate verse at the beginning of every surah, except Surat al-Tawbah, and it is not part of Surat al-Fatihah, nor of any other surah, according to the most correct of the scholars' opinions, but it is part of a verse from Surat al-Naml. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
