Combining the Prayers for One Afflicted with Kidney Dialysis
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The second question of Fatwa No. ( 19870 )
Q2: My kidneys have stopped functioning, and I go to the hospital three times a week for blood dialysis, which takes about three hours. The procedure for blood dialysis is that blood exits the body through one of the veins, then passes through a machine that purifies it of impurities, and returns to the body through another vein. My question, O honorable Shaykh, is: 1 - Does the exit and return of the blood invalidate the wudu? 2 - Is it permissible for me to combine the Zuhr and 'Asr prayers if I know that the time for 'Asr will enter while I am under the machines? 3 - Is it permissible for me to pray while I am under the machines during the dialysis? 4 - Is it permissible for me to pray the Zuhr prayer, for example, before its time enters, and until its time enters, is it based on the call to prayer (adhan), the iqamah, or the calendar? 5 - On some occasions, the nurse may make a mistake in inserting the needle, causing blood to come out that may stain my clothes. Does this exiting blood invalidate the wudu, and is it obligatory for me to wash my clothes of it? We ask for the answer. May Allah reward you with good.
A2 : It is permissible to advance the 'Asr prayer and pray it with the Zuhr as a combination for one who
is unable to pray 'Asr in its time due to the continuation of the dialysis process until sunset. It is not permissible to pray Zuhr or any other prayer before its time enters, and the time for Zuhr begins from the sun passing its zenith (zawal) from above the heads. One may rely on the calendar calculation and hearing the adhan to know this. The exit of a small amount of blood does not invalidate the wudu, and it is impure (najasah), so it is obligatory to wash whatever it affects of the garment or the body. As for a large amount of blood that exits the body, it invalidates the wudu, whether its exit is for kidney dialysis or otherwise; because it is the exit of a large amount of impurity from the body. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
