Q: We inform your eminence that we are in the process of implementing administrative buildings in the al-Sulayl area, and we and the consultant are in disagreement regarding the restrooms and bathrooms facing the direction of Makkah al-Mukarramah , knowing that all the bathrooms are inside enclosed buildings and are not open in the open air, and are used by men only. We kindly request your guidance on the following situation: Is it permissible to sit to relieve oneself in any direction inside the enclosed bathrooms, or is there something that prevents that?
A: It is permissible to sit to relieve oneself in built bathrooms facing any direction; because it has been established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) what indicates that, but it is better not to face the qiblah or turn one’s back to it in a building if that is possible, in order to avoid the disagreement of some scholars. As for in the desert, it is not permissible to face the qiblah or turn one’s back to it while relieving oneself; because of what is in (the two Sahihs) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan ad-Daraqutni 1:145 . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
