Following the matches of non-Muslim teams

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: We are facing a problem that has spread among the youth, which is: following the matches in the European league for European Christian teams, to the extent that
some of them have the cross emblem on their jerseys. The students and the youth in general love these teams and defend them, and it has even extended to wearing their clothes, even if they do not have a cross on the chest. Some of the youth and students also take pictures of some of the players from these teams on the computer and put them on their chest and boast about them, and they buy the T-shirts and flags for these teams. I am telling you this from the reality of some schools where this is done for the students' teams in the internal school competitions, and we seek help from Allah. I am a teacher working in a school, and this happened, so I advised them, but some of them responded that the heart is good and we do not intend anything by it. We hope that Your Eminence the Shaykh will issue a comprehensive fatwa on this matter; as advice to the Muslim youth, both boys and girls, so that they do not be lenient in this matter with the tremendous media openness, which has made it easy for love of the disbelievers to enter the hearts of some of our students when they became impressed with their playing. We also hope for advice to the sports clothing merchants to avoid that, and to buy and make clothes for our teams, whether sports or ordinary. May Allah take care of us and you.

A: It is not permissible to wear, sell, or import sports clothing that bears symbols representing the religions of the disbelievers, such as the cross and the like, and also clothing that symbolizes the exaltation of the disbelievers by placing pictures of the players on it, or writing their names
and the like; because that is from the manifestations of loyalty to the disbelievers and imitating them, and it was reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
He who copies any people is one of them.من تشبه بقوم فهو منهم
Sunan Abi Dawud 4031Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani)
. It was narrated by Ahmad , and Abu Dawud . Our advice to our brothers the clothing merchants is to fear Allah and watch over Him, and to advise their Muslim brothers, so that they do not sell except what contains good and benefit and assistance in the obedience of Allah, and selling clothing that contradicts the Shari'ah is assistance in the disobedience of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and Allah the Exalted said:
And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.وَتَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَى وَلاَ تَعَاوَنُوا عَلَى الْإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:2]
. And in selling permissible goods there is sufficiency from the forbidden, and whoever leaves the forbidden for the sake of Allah, Allah will compensate him with something better than what he lost, and Allah the Exalted said:
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (3) And will provide for him from where he does not expect.وَمَنْ يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا (2) وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لاَ يَحْتَسِبُ
[At-Talaq 65:2-3]
