Q: We submit this question to your eminence, informing you that we are a group of employees at one of the SABIC factories in the Second Industrial City on the Khurayjah Road , 50 km from Riyadh . Our work requires our presence on site for 24 hours, where we perform the five daily prayers in the factory control room behind the control screens and alarm devices, and the telephone, in an area of approximately 3 m × 6 m. We have performed the Friday prayer twice
in this place, and our number does not exceed ten . Please note that there is no mosque near us, nor any residential buildings, and we are unable to leave the factory during the Friday prayer due to the extreme necessity required by the work. Is it permissible for us to perform the Friday prayer in this place? Please note that we may miss the Friday prayer once or twice a month throughout the year. Is the Friday prayer we have previously performed valid? Please issue a ruling, and may you be rewarded.
A: If the situation is as you described, then the Friday prayer is not obligatory upon you in this case, nor is it valid from you; because one of the conditions for the validity of the Friday prayer is that those who perform it are settled residents, and you are not so, rather you are stationed at the workplace. Accordingly, you must repeat the prayers you performed as Friday at your workplace, by making them up as the midday prayer. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
