Combining the 'Asr prayer with the Friday prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 19887 )
Q: I submit to your Eminence that one of the imams of the mosques in the region has combined the 'Asr prayer with the Friday prayer, combining them by advancing the 'Asr prayer, as it was raining during the performance of the Friday prayer on that day . Many of those who attended with that imam have asked whether their prayer is valid, whether they are required to repeat the 'Asr prayer, and whether your Eminence, may Allah benefit you, sees it beneficial to inform the congregation of the mosque in the coming Friday to repeat the 'Asr prayer because it was not valid? I ask your Eminence to look into this and issue a ruling on what you see fit. May Allah grant you health and well-being, multiply your reward and recompense, and benefit us and the Muslims in general with your knowledge. Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
A: What the imam of the aforementioned mosque did in combining 'Asr with the Friday prayer due to the rain was an exercise of independent legal reasoning (ijtihad) on his part, may Allah reward him with good, and it is an error with no basis in the Shari'ah. It is not permissible to combine the Friday prayer with 'Asr, because this was not transmitted from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), nor from his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) after him, and because the Friday prayer is not of the same kind as 'Asr. Accordingly, this imam and the followers who combined the Friday prayer with 'Asr must repeat the 'Asr prayer only; because they prayed it before its time without a valid legal justification. It is
necessary to inform them of this, and to issue a general directive to the imams of the mosques that this is not permissible, so that this does not recur and cause confusion among the followers, and so that they do not suffer harm in their religion by performing the prayer outside its time, and what follows from that of making it up outside its time. It is reported that rain fell during the time of the Friday prayer in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was leading the people in the Friday prayer, and he did not combine the prayers with them (peace and blessings be upon him). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
