The questioner : A man says he has four sons and two daughters. Is it permissible for each of them to pray individually? And if they pray in congregation with the father leading them, is it permissible for the two daughters to pray next to the sons within the congregation, or is it obligatory for them to be in the last row? Likewise, if only one of the daughters is present, or if the mother is alone, does she stand in a row by herself?
The Shaykh : The answer to this question is from two angles. The first angle is that it is not permissible for you or your father to pray at home as long as the mosque is near you and you can hear the call to prayer, for it is obligatory for you to attend the mosque with the Muslims, because congregational prayer is obligatory in the mosques. However, if there is no mosque around you and you cannot hear the call to prayer, then you pray in congregation at home. If women pray with you, they stand behind you. A woman does not have a row next to men, even if they are her mahram (relatives one may not marry). In the two Sahihs (al-Bukhari and Muslim), from the hadith of Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed with him and his mother, and there was an orphan with them. Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) and the orphan stood in a row behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the woman stood behind them. Thus, a woman has no place with men; her place is behind men, even if they are her mahram.
