Fatwa No. ( 17154 )
Q: Standing in prayer on the night of 'Id al-Fitr—tarawih prayer—in the mosque: what is the ruling on that, and is it part of Ramadan or part of Shawwal?
A: Singling out the night of the 'Id for standing in prayer, as distinct from the other nights, is considered a religious innovation (bid'ah); because it was not part of the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 1718b , whether one does it alone or in congregation. As for one who has a regular habit of standing in prayer on the other nights, there is nothing wrong with doing it on the night of the 'Id, but it should not be done in congregation. The night of 'Id al-Fitr is not part of Ramadan once the entry of the month of Shawwal is established. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
