Affirming the Attribute of the Two Hands

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 16325 )
Q: I heard from one of the students of knowledge, in the course of his speech on the names and attributes, affirming the attribute of the two hands for Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) , and he added by saying, "Both of His hands are the right hand." What is the intended meaning and what is the evidence?
A: It is obligatory to affirm the attribute of the two hands for Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) as in the texts of the two noble revelations. Among these is the saying of Allah the Exalted in Surat al-Ma'idah:
Rather, both His hands are extended; He spends however He wills.بَلْ يَدَاهُ مَبْسُوطَتَانِ يُنْفِقُ كَيْفَ يَشَاءُ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:64]
, and His saying (Glorified is He) in Surat Sad, addressing Iblis:
what prevented you from prostrating to that which I created with My hands?مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَسْجُدَ لِمَا خَلَقْتُ بِيَدَيَّ
[Sad 38:75]
. As for the hadiths that explicitly mention the hands, they are very numerous, and they are well known in the books of the people of the Sunnah and the community. Among them is what is established from the hadith of 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Those who act justly will be with God on pulpits of light* at the right hand of the Compassionate One, and both His hands are right. They are those who are just in their jurisdiction, towards their people and what is under their charge.المقسطون عند الله على منابر من نور على يمين الرحمن، وكلتا يديه يمين، وهم الذين يعدلون في حكمهم وأهليهم وما ولوا
Mishkat al-Masabih 3690
.
The methodology of the people of the Sunnah and the community regarding the names and attributes of Allah is that they believe in what came in the Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and what is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), without figurative interpretation or likening Allah to creation, and without distortion of a text's meaning or denial of the divine attributes. Nothing of the attributes of deficiency is ascribed to Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He). And his saying in the hadith:
Both His hands are rightكلتا يديه يمين
Al-Baghawi transmitted from al-Khattabi (may Allah have mercy on them both) that this is an attribute that came by divine specification, so we attribute it to Him as it came without asking how an attribute is, and we stop where the Book and the authentic reports stop us, and this is the methodology of the people of the Sunnah and the community. And some of the scholars said: The meaning of
Both His hands are right handsوكلتا يديه يمين
is in terms of honor and excellence, even if one of them is called the left, as came in the hadith of Ibn 'Umar in (Sahih Muslim ). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
