Q: We ask Your Eminence to issue a ruling and guide us, O Shaykh. We are firefighters in the Civil Defense in Madinah al-Munawwarah. Sometimes a fire breaks out in an old house, and while we are extinguishing the fire, snakes and scorpions appear to us. What should we do? What are the supplications to be recited in such cases? Do we kill the snakes as soon as we see them? Please inform us and issue a ruling for us. May Allah reward you with the best reward. Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings.
A: It is obligatory for you to perform your work as required. If you encounter snakes, seek refuge in Allah the Exalted from them three times. If they
disappear, otherwise continue your work; based on what is in (Musnad al-Imam Ahmad ) from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: . The meaning is: that the one with two humps and the tailless snake are to be killed, and not warned, due to the severity of their harm.
